I remember that day clearly, when I sat down at the kitchen table with newspapers, a toothpick, and some 7 year old clay, with one intent in mind: to make a clay figure "As good as Evelyn" did. Well, my first outcome (a hamburger with a dark brown bun and multiple other colors mixed in from being stored in the same bag) was far from what could be called "good," but I was pleased, and after I baked it, I paraded it around. A few weeks later, I set out to make a pizza with the same clay: Dark brown for the crust, and speckled colors on everything else. It was slightly better than the hamburger, so i baked it and admired it as my best piece. Now, I sit down in my craft room, with blades, x-acto knives, and needle tools, grab month old clay stored in separate bags, labeled with the baking instructions. I have mastered the art of "sauces," shading, and texturing. That day in the kitchen, I never dreamed that the clay molded by my hands would be so proudly labeled with the logo of Janarial or so proudly worn by so many people. I never dared to hope that so many memories would be induced by a simple lump of clay, or so many children entertained by my doll food.
I am so proud that Janarial has come so far and I hope that it continues for much, much, longer, to bring joy to many more people. So, like we always say, Here's to childhood!
